О курсе

This course is designed as an introductory course on financial reporting. Hence, this course requires no prior knowledge of financial reporting. In this course, we will focus on preparing and interpreting information in financial statements, as prepared under International Financial Reporting Standards, or IFRS. Hence, this course could be useful if you want to increase your knowledge about these areas. For each topic, first, we will discuss relevant theory and standards from IFRS. Second, we will discuss how to apply this theory and standards using applied examples. Where relevant, we will supplement these discussions using financial statements published by the Swiss food and beverage company Nestle.

Upon completion of this course the learners will achieve the following learning objectives:

1.1. Understand the purpose of financial reporting

1.2. Explain the type of information included in financial reports

1.3. Explain the principles and concepts that financial reporting under International Financial Reporting Standards is based on

2.1. Explain the difference between revenue and cash inflows and between expenses and cash outflows

2.2. Recognize revenue and expenses under accrual accounting

2.3. Recognize revenue under IFRS 15

3.1. Apply the criteria from IAS 1 used to determine whether an asset or liability is classified as current or non-current

3.2. Apply the standards under IFRS for recognition and measurement for inventory, trade receivables, and short-term investments

3.3. Apply principles related to recognition and measurement for trade payables

4.1. Apply IAS 16 for PP&E and IAS 38 for intangible assets

4.2. Apply IAS 36 for impairments of PP&E and intangible assets

4.3. Interpret items in the financial statements related to PP&E and intangible assets

5.1. Recognize interest expense on long-term debt using the effective-interest method from IFRS 9

5.2. Recognize different types of events that involve equity

5.3. Present equity accounts on the balance sheet and statement of equity

6.1. Calculate and present cash flows from investing activities and cash flows from financing activities

6.2. Calculate and present cash flows from operating activities, using the indirect method and direct method

6.3. Prepare a statement of cash flows
