The purpose of the course is to give an idea of the main functions of the heart at the molecular, cellular and organ levels, to describe the mechanisms of regulation, as well as the main dysfunctions of this organ.

About

The program of the course on physiology of the heart is compiled taking into account the state standard for teaching the basic course of physiology according to the undergraduate curriculum.

An important feature of the course is the presentation of the material at different levels: a combination of molecular, cellular and systemic approaches in describing the functions of organs.

The course presents basic and modern data on the functional features and histological structure of cardiomyocytes; formation of the action potential of various myocardial cells; fundamentals of myocardial mechanics, mechanisms of contraction and relaxation of cardiomyocytes; principles of intercellular interaction of myocardial cells; cellular electrophysiology in myocardial ischemia; mechanisms of action of cardiotropic pharmacological drugs; heart dysfunction.

Format

The form of education is part-time (distance). Weekly classes will include watching thematic video lectures, studying additional materials and completing test tasks with automated verification of results, testing on the material covered.

Requirements

This course is a stage of basic fundamental training of students in the specialty of physiology.

Course program

Topic 1. Heart As an Element  of the Circulatory  System. Heart Function and Its Main Characteristics

Topic 2. Heart Automaticity. Cardiac Conduction System

Topic 3. Action Potential of the Working Myocardium and Its Physiological Consequences

Topic 4. Electrocardiogram and Its Relationship with Electrophysiological Processes in the Heart

Topic 5. Mechanisms of Regulation of Heart Activity

Topic 6. Coronary Blood Flow. Myocardial Metabolism. Changes in the Activity of the Heart During Functional Loads

Education results

Upon completion of this course, students will:

Formed competencies

The discipline is aimed at the formation of universal competencies of students in the educational programs of the bachelor's / specialist's degree, as well as other competencies provided for by the educational program.

Education directions

1. The main functions of the heart and understand the essence of the physiological processes underlying their implementation

2. Molecular and cellular bases of the functions of the heart, features of the interaction of its various departments

3. Understand the systemic mechanisms of regulation of the activity of the heart and interaction with other systems or processes in the body

4. The main stage in the development of this section of physiology and the role of domestic scientists in its creation and development

5. The essence of the main methods for studying various functions of the heart, which are used in scientific research and practical medicine

Skills

Be able to:

1. Outline the main physiological processes and mechanisms of their regulation in the activity of the heart, as well as its dysfunction

2. Explain the physiological significance of various indicators (constants) characterizing the functions of the heart

3. Use various indicators to assess the functional state of the heart

4. Analyse fundamental problems of the physiology of the heart and applied problems in the field of preservation of its functions
